Westminster abbey

Today, besides having the first day of real classes, we took a field trip to Westminster Abbey. Now, this is my third time to be in the great city of London, but this was the first time I had actually ever been inside Westminster. Walking in through the front made me automatically think of Harry potter. It looks like it could've been one of the courtyards that they used to film the movies. After we had everyone we entered the actual church, which was very crowded. The moment you walk in and take your first glimpse of your surroundings is amazing and breath taking. The architecture alone would be enough to keep you there so hours, less you forget all the amazing historical figures who have monuments and tombs there.  We first stopped at the tomb of the unknown solider, which was very different  than the one we have back in the states. It was dressed with paper poppy flowers and had different aspect of the tomb that were from all over the countries that took part in WWI.  We then moved on to the tombs of people like Charles Darwin, Herschel, and sir Isaac Newton. I had a little bit of a weird moment there when I realized that I was literally standing next to Newton, which is something I never thought I would do. We continued on through the church looking at tombs and memorials of kings and queens passed as well as other famous figures such as Lewis Carol, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and many other famous literary writers.  It was over all amazing experience to be in a place that had so much meaning to so many.  I hope that in the coming weeks I will get to know some of the people that we saw today by reading the amazing things that they have left behind.
